A 38-year-old single Dutch woman finds herself like a stranger in her hometown after years of working in Afghanistan with the United Nations.

Where is home? To the majority of people, home means where we live and a sense of belonging. But growing up in Taiwan and having lived in New York, England, Germany and now the Netherlands over the past 15 years, I cannot give a definite answer and have always wanted to write a story that asks this question.

Where is home? I should say Taiwan since I have spent more than half of my life there, and most of my friends and family live there. But I have felt it less and less like home when I go back in recent years — my parents have been aging so quickly that I can lose this home of my biological family at any time while my friends have started their chosen family, becoming someone’s husband or wife, father or mother.

Where is home? I try give an answer in Go Home by shooting a scene in which the protagonist visits the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and a piece named “Home Is Where the Heart Is” by Taiwanese calligraphic artist, Tong Yang-Tze 董陽孜, enlightens her. The line originates from Su Dongpo 蘇東坡, a Chinese poet and scholar-official of the Song dynasty. He wrote “Home is where the heart finds peace” in the 9th century to soothe his mind after a power struggle that led to his relegation to a frontier region.

Go Home is dedicated to people who left their hometown to pursue a life that they want. The film also wants to inspire people to leave their hometown if things do not work out there. Humans are migratory animals. Home could be just where one's heart is.
